Dryburgh Abbey is the very first place I visited in Scotland and the United Kingdom.

Dryburgh Abbey is a former Premonstratensian monastery founded in the 12th century. It served as a spiritual center and place of prayer until the 16th century, when it was damaged during the wars with Scotland. Despite its damage, it has preserved impressive Gothic architecture and a tranquil atmosphere that invites visitors to quietly explore its history.

It is a peaceful place hidden among the trees by the River Tweed on the Scottish Borders. It is the ruin of an abbey founded in the 12th century, and you will also find the grave of the famous writer Walter Scott here.

Inside the monastery, you can find a spiral staircase that leads to a lookout from which you can view the entire site.

The lookout can fit a maximum of one person. The staircase is quite narrow, and two people can't fit here. :)

The gardens at Dryburgh Abbey are peaceful and meticulously maintained, with beautiful trees, lawns, and views of the surrounding nature. A walk among the monastery ruins and the greenery creates a quiet, almost meditative atmosphere. The place feels very calm and natural, ideal for rest or quiet contemplation.

Inside the ruins of Dryburgh Abbey, you will find several preserved areas where fragments of the original decoration and architectural elements are displayed – stone reliefs, fragments of columns, or decorative details of windows. These pieces give visitors an idea of what the monastery looked like in its time of greatest glory. Some smaller rooms serve as simple exhibits where you can examine these artifacts up close and better understand their historical significance.

If you are traveling by car or motorcycle, parking is available right at the site.
