Barcelona was the first city I visited in Spain. I spent 3 days here.

If I had more time, I would definitely have extended my stay - in three days I had to move fast to see as many sights and experiences as possible.

A Few Tips Before You Head to Barcelona

Ideal Length of Stay in Barcelona

Barcelona is a sprawling and vibrant city that deserves time to explore. I recommend setting aside at least 4–5 days if you want to soak up the city’s atmosphere without rushing and enjoy the sights and local culture at a relaxed pace.

Booking Tickets in Advance

For visiting Barcelona's most popular attractions, such as the Sagrada Familia or Park Güell, advance reservations are often required as much as a month ahead. Without them, you probably won’t get in. If you’re planning to visit these and other popular sites, check the reservation requirements in advance to avoid potential disappointment.

Air Travel

If direct flights to Barcelona are too expensive, consider flying to nearby Girona instead. Buses run directly from Girona Airport to Barcelona with minimal stops, so the trip goes by quickly and can save you some money.

Accomodation Outside the City Center

For more affordable accommodations, try Premia de Mar, from where you can reach Barcelona by train in about 15 minutes. With a multi-day ticket, transportation will cost less than staying in the city center. It’s calm in the morning, with ATMs, cafés, and a pleasant local vibe.

Sagrada Familia – The Iconic Landmark of Barcelona

Sagrada Familia is one of the most famous landmarks in Barcelona and a globally recognized work by architect Antoni Gaudí. This extraordinary cathedral is known for its unique, organic shapes and detailed facades. Visiting the Sagrada Familia is an unforgettable experience that should not be missed on any trip to Barcelona.

The only thing that disappointed me a bit during my visit was the omnipresent cranes. While they’re an unavoidable part of its restoration, they detract somewhat from the overall impression and beauty of the monument.

Park Güell – A Colorful Park and Gaudí’s Masterpiece

Park Güell is one of the most popular spots in Barcelona and a brilliant example of Antoni Gaudí’s creative genius. This colorful park offers not only stunning views of the city but also unique architecture, including the famous mosaic benches and ornaments. Besides the free areas, tickets are required to enter the Monumental Zone, and advance booking is essential. The park is perfect for nature lovers, art enthusiasts, and photographers, and it’s definitely worth a visit when in Barcelona.

Mirador de Joan Sales – A Great Spot with Views of Barcelona

Mirador de Joan Sales is a lookout platform offering stunning panoramic views of Barcelona and its surroundings. Located in the Montjuïc area, it’s an ideal spot for fans of beautiful views and photography. From here, you can admire both the cityscape and the harbor with the sea beyond. This peaceful and less crowded location provides a pleasant escape from tourist crowds and is a great place for relaxation or a leisurely walk.

Casa Batlló – Gaudí's Architectural Marvel

Casa Batlló is one of the most stunning and fascinating buildings in Barcelona, designed by Antoni Gaudí. This captivating structure, known for its wavy shapes, colorful ceramic mosaics, and surrealistic details, is located on the famous Passeig de Gràcia.

Casa Batlló has been transformed into a museum, where visitors can explore not only the interiors but also special multimedia exhibits about Gaudí's life and work.

I personally really enjoyed my visit to Casa Batlló. I found this house to be perhaps even more beautiful than the Sagrada Familia.

I definitely recommend visiting it if you’re in Barcelona. Although it’s not necessary to book tickets in advance, I suggest arriving in the morning to avoid the long lines that often form here.

Casa Milà (La Pedrera) – Gaudí's Unique Building

Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera, is another masterpiece by Antoni Gaudí, located on the famous Passeig de Gràcia in Barcelona. This fascinating building, known for its wavy façade design and irregular shapes, is one of the best examples of modernist architecture. Visitors can explore both the interiors and the rooftop terrace with unique chimneys that resemble sculptures. I recommend purchasing tickets in advance to avoid long lines and visiting during quieter hours.

Mercado de La Boqueria – A Colorful Market in the Heart of Barcelona

Mercado de La Boqueria is one of the most famous and vibrant markets in Barcelona, located on the bustling La Rambla street. This historic market offers a wide range of fresh products, from fruits and vegetables to seafood, meats, and traditional Spanish delicacies.

It’s an ideal place to sample local specialties, such as tapas or freshly squeezed juices. The market is popular not only among tourists but also locals, and it’s definitely worth a visit for an authentic taste of Barcelona’s atmosphere.

They sell a lot of local delicacies here. I definitely recommend trying Jamón Ibérico. It’s sold in boxes where several types are mixed together.

Jamón Ibérico is a high-quality ham from black Iberian pigs. This type of ham is considered a delicacy and is known for its tenderness and intense flavor. There are different types of Jamón Ibérico, such as Jamón Ibérico de Bellota, which comes from pigs that feed primarily on acorns and is considered the finest.

La Rambla

La Rambla is a famous pedestrian street in Barcelona, Spain. It is one of the city's most iconic locations, stretching from Plaza de Catalunya to the harbor (Port Vell). La Rambla is about 1.2 kilometers long and is a popular spot for both tourists and locals.

The street is known for its vibrant atmosphere, where pedestrians, street artists, stalls, and cafés mingle. On both sides of the street, you’ll find shops, restaurants, theaters, as well as historical landmarks such as the Mercat de la Boqueria (market), Gran Teatre del Liceu (opera house), and Plaça Reial.

La Rambla is famous for its flower stalls, street exhibitions, and artistic performances. Although it’s a tourist attraction, it still retains its unique Barcelona atmosphere.

Plaça de Catalunya – The Heart of Barcelona

Plaça de Catalunya is one of the busiest and most important squares in Barcelona, connecting the historic city center with the modern districts. The square is also known for its impressive fountains and statues and is a major transportation hub. From Plaça de Catalunya, you can easily continue to the famous La Rambla or the El Raval district. It’s a great place to relax and start your city tour.

Arc de Triomf

The Arc de Triomf is a beautiful triumphal arch located at the edge of Ciutadella Park in Barcelona. This impressive monument was built in 1888 as the main entrance to the World Expo and is known for its distinctive red brick construction in a neoclassical style. The arch is surrounded by wide promenades, making it a perfect spot for walks, photos, and relaxation. It’s also an excellent starting point for exploring the nearby park or visiting the historic center of Barcelona.

The triumphal arch is easily accessible by metro, making it a great place to start or end your day in Barcelona.

Plaça Reial

Plaça Reial is one of the most beautiful and lively squares in Barcelona, located near La Rambla. This historic square is surrounded by elegant buildings with vaulted arcades and is known for its atmosphere, making it an ideal spot to relax with a glass of wine or tapas. The square also features beautiful lamps designed by Antoni Gaudí, as well as several cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy local specialties. Plaça Reial is a great place to spend an evening, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of Barcelona.

I definitely recommend sitting down for a while at Plaça Reial to enjoy some good food or a drink.

Tibidabo

Tibidabo is a mountain that offers some of the best views of Barcelona and its surroundings. In addition to the stunning panoramic scenery, you’ll find the Tibidabo amusement park, one of the oldest in Europe. At the top, there is also the impressive Temple de Sagrat Cor, a church that dominates the entire city. Tibidabo is an ideal place for families with children, as well as for those looking for peace and beautiful views of Barcelona.

You can easily reach Tibidabo by cable car. I recommend purchasing a round-trip ticket. To get to the cable car, you can take a combination of the metro and bus.

Montjuïc and Montjuïc Fountain – A Hill with Panoramic Views and Cultural Attractions

Montjuïc is a hill in Barcelona that offers not only beautiful views of the city and the harbor but also a range of interesting cultural and historical landmarks. At the top, you’ll find Montjuïc Castle, which served as a military fortress and is now open to the public. Other attractions include the Fundació Joan Miró, the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC), and the 1992 Olympic Stadium complex. Montjuïc is an ideal place for lovers of history, culture, and nature, whether you want to visit museums, stroll through gardens, or enjoy the views from the top.

If you're lucky, you might encounter local artists on Montjuïc who often play music, creating a pleasant atmosphere. Additionally, there are several drink stalls, so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the music and views of Barcelona. It’s a great spot to unwind after exploring all the cultural and historical landmarks in the area.

However, the fountain has been turned off since the pandemic.

Montjuïc Castle – A Historic Fortress with Breathtaking Views

Montjuïc Castle is an impressive fortress located at the top of Montjuïc Hill, offering stunning views of Barcelona and its harbor. This historic castle was originally built in the 17th century as a military fortress and has served various purposes throughout its history, including the defense of the city and as a prison. Today, it is open to the public, and visitors can explore its expansive courtyards, towers, and military exhibits.

Montjuïc Castle is also a great place for walks, photos, and relaxation in the fresh air, offering panoramic views of Barcelona and the local harbor.

Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys – A Stadium with Olympic History

Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys is a stadium located on Montjuïc Hill and was the main venue for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona. Named after Catalan president Lluís Companys, the stadium has a capacity of over 55,000 spectators and is now used for various sporting events, concerts, and cultural activities.
