The downside of Madrid

When visiting Madrid, be aware of the following:

• Unassuming narrow streets: while Madrid is a beautiful city, I recommend staying out of the busy areas. Avoid the narrow streets where no one is. It's easy to get lost in them. It's a tourist trap in Madrid. There is an increased risk of mugging and robbery. I speak from experience because a hostel roommate was robbed when he tried to cut his way to his hostel through the local winding streets, where a group of thieves spotted him and took everything he had except his suitcase. He was rescued with money and cards under his belt.
• Wandering Madrid alone at night: I definitely recommend spending one night in Madrid in full. But beware. If you're planning on going out to a bar, for example, make sure you don't go alone. There are all kinds of groups roaming the streets in the evening. They will literally hug you and lure you into bars and local businesses. The advice I got from the locals was "You're white and you speak English, don't go anywhere alone at night".
• Pickpockets: There will always be someone hanging around you in busy squares
• Beggars: I have probably never seen so many beggars in any other Spanish city as in Madrid. They are on almost every corner and by every monument. Sometimes they will come towards you when you are looking at a map or sitting on a bench, so be on the lookout.
