The bus transportation from Málaga to Gibraltar is fast and comfortable. However, it took me some effort to figure out how it works 😄.

Below, I have compiled tips for you so that you don't have to search for anything!

If you are looking for tips on what to visit in Gibraltar, I have written an article titled "What to See in Gibraltar." 😄

Bus service from Malaga to Gibraltar

If you want to find transport from Malaga to Gibraltar, you need to search:

  • For the trip there: Malaga => La Línea de la Concepción (not Gibraltar)
  • For the trip back: La Línea de la Concepción => Malaga

Personally, I used the Rome2Rio search engine most often in Spain. Here you can easily find a large number of connections that match the times of what actually runs in reality. I always found a time and connection, and then bought tickets directly from the carrier. But you can make a purchase directly through Rome2Rio. Sometimes, however, they do not offer, for example, seat selection, etc.:

  • List of connections  Malaga => La Linea de la Concepcion.
  • List of connections connections back from La Linea de la Concepcion => Malaga.
  • The main carriers here are Alsa and Avanza. It is possible that you will not be able to access the website from your country. Some Spanish websites have this. You can only access them in Spain.
  • Buses run almost every hour. Early in the morning on weekends, as early as 6:30.
  • The trip from Malaga to Gibraltar and back takes about 2.5 hours each. The buses fill up quite quickly, so I recommend buying in advance, at least 1 to 2 days in advance.
  • If you want to have a quiet visit, I recommend taking the early morning bus. The first one runs at 6:30 during the season. I recommend booking the return bus in advance. Otherwise, you will have to rush to see everything you want to see and you will not enjoy the visit very much. You will be pushed behind others in the cable cars and traveling in the heat on a bus in Spain is also not particularly pleasant.

The boarding and alighting point in Malaga is Estación de Autobuses de Málaga:

The boarding and disembarkation point in Gibraltar for the bus from Malaga and back is called La Linea de la Concepcion:

Entry into Gibraltar

You can get to Gibraltar by crossing the border and passing through the airport.

For EU citizens, only a valid passport is required. For non-EU citizens, a valid passport is required. You can find more information on their FAQ page. But to be on the safe side, I recommend taking your passport with you. You don't want to plan a day trip that ends before it starts. The first thing they asked me about was my passport, not my passport or any other document.

What currency is used in Gibraltar?

Both Gibraltar pounds and British pounds are commonly used in Gibraltar and are accepted without any problems. However, Gibraltar pounds may not be accepted outside Gibraltar, although they are formally of equal value to the British pound.

Gibraltar uses pounds as it is a British Overseas Territory with close ties to the UK. Although Gibraltar is located in southern Europe, bordering Spain, its economy and political system are closely linked to Britain, and therefore the Gibraltar Pound (GIP) is used, which is the same value as the British Pound (GBP). Travellers can also use British Pounds, which are widely accepted, making it easier for tourists coming from the UK to pay.

Alternative transport connections

If you take the train, you still have to change to a bus. The train does not go all the way to Gibraltar. With a change, the journey is more expensive and longer.

Another option is your own car, which will take you about 1.5 hours.

The last alternative is Car Sharing or hitchhiking. However, if you want to get to Gibraltar on time and be sure that the connection will run, I recommend avoiding these methods.

How to get to the cable car?

The cable car to the top of Gibraltar runs from the parking lot below the hill.

Where to eat?

I recommend eating at the restaurant in Gibraltar, which is located in the middle of the hill. There is a beautiful view, a large selection of food and at good prices.

But if you don't want to look for anything complicated and want to eat somewhere before leaving, there is a McDonald's in Gibraltar. It is a short distance from the exit of Gibraltar and there are clean toilets.
